Rural Health
Principal Investigator. Development of a Rural African American Church-based Curriculum Using Parents as Change Agents to Delay Sexual Activity Among Adolescents, Texas Department of Health, Innovation Grants, August, 2001-September, 2003. ($275.000).
The project focuses on the assessment and development of a culturally sensitive curriculum for parent education on African American adolescent sexuality. The project is rural focused and working with lay health workers within the church community. Key information will be collected on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behavior as it relates to HIV/AIDS and sexuality health.
Principal Investigator. Evaluation of Rural Health Clinics for Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Outcomes in Texas. Texas Department of Health, Center for Rural Health Initiatives, December, 1996-August, 1998. ($50,000)
The project focuses on evaluating patient satisfaction and organizational capacity of Rural Health Clinics in Texas. Two surveys were conducted with a sample of RHCs focusing on: 1) RHC administrators and 2) RHC patients.
Cancer
Principal Investigator. Rural African-American Church-based Cancer Prevention Initiative. Texas Cancer Council, September, 1995-August 31, 1998. ($173,100)
The project focuses on building rural African-American Church-based coalitions with an initial emphasis on cancer prevention. The goal of the project is to build self-efficacy among church coalition members during Year I. It is proposed to build collective-efficacy during Year II with the inclusion of other community residents and resources for expansion and maintenance beyond funding period. Project deliverables will include a rural African-American church-based coalition-training manual and empowerment evaluation assessment and tools. The evaluation of behavior-changes among participants was conducted.
Principal Investigator. Cancer Prevention Materials and African-Americans-Audiovisuals. Texas Cancer Council, September, 1995-August 31, 1996 ($50,000)
The project is conducting a cultural sensitivity evaluation of all cancer prevention audiovisual materials targeting African Americans. The project will develop cultural sensitivity guidelines and assessment tool for the future development of cancer prevention audiovisual materials targeting African Americans. Project deliverables will include guidelines, cultural sensitivity assessment tool, and a resource directory.
Principal Investigator. Cancer Prevention Materials and African-Americans-Printed Materials, Texas Cancer Council, September, 1994-August, 1995. ($50,000).
The project conducted a cultural sensitivity evaluation of all cancer prevention printed materials targeting African Americans. The project developed cultural sensitivity guidelines and assessment tool for the future development of cancer prevention printed materials targeting African Americans. Project deliverables included guidelines, cultural sensitivity assessment tool, and a resource directory.
Principal Investigator. Cancer Prevention in 10 Rural Counties, Texas Cancer Council, September, 1994-August, 1995. ($80,000).
The project worked with the development and sustainment of 10 rural cancer prevention coalitions. Collaboration was conducted with rural hospitals, rural health clinics, county extension service, chamber of commerce, schools, churches, and community based organizations to plan, implement, and evaluation countywide cancer prevention activities. The project reached over 150 persons in each county with cancer prevention information.
Co-Investigator. Barriers to Cancer Treatment Initiative. Texas Cancer Council, September, 1992-December, 1993. ($107,000).
A statewide survey of cancer patients' perceived barriers to cancer treatment was conducted with a representative sample of cancer patients participating in a cancer consortium. The project findings included the following reported barriers: cost, lack of formal and informal social support, transportation, information and fear.
Immunization
Principal Investigator. Self-Study Module Analysis and Statewide Immunization Training Needs Assessment. Texas Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control, November, 1995-December 31, 1996. ($200,000)
The project consisted of the organization of a statewide taskforce of nurses, physicians, public health clinic administrators, social workers, human service representatives, pharmaceutical representatives, and lay people to develop, implement and evaluate the immunization training needs for the State of Texas. In addition, an evaluation of the benefits of implementing a self-study module analysis program was conducted. Project activities include statewide survey of health care professionals, focus groups, geographical analysis of immunization providers and recommendations for improved training and dissemination programs.
Principal Investigator. Immunization Nursing Training Educational Curriculum, Texas Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control, June, 1995-August 31, 1996. ($252,000).
The project consisted of a collaborative effort between Texas A&M, University of Texas School of Nursing-Austin, University of Texas School of Nursing-Tyler, Blinn Junior College Associate Degree and Licensed Vocational Nursing programs. This project conducted site-visit task analyses, statewide self-administered nurses= survey, and the development of a training module for immunization administration. Project deliverables will be a nursing immunization administration curriculum and train-the-trainer program.
Diabetes
Principal Investigator. Diabetes Education and Pregnancy Project. Texas Diabetes Council, November, 1995-August 31, 1996. ($259,000)
The project consisted of a collaborative effort between Texas A&M, Scott and White Hospital and Health Maintenance Organization and the Texas Diabetes Council. The project organized a statewide working group consisting of nurses, family practitioners, social workers, physician assistants, community health educators, and dieticians. Specific activities included a needs assessment for information related to diabetes and pregnancy including patient education materials. The development of culturally-sensitive patient education materials and professional curriculum for the management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.
